Project Briefs:
Standardized Demineralized Water Treatment Design Wins Repeat Awards Across Multi-State Power Generation Program
Project Overview
As a major U.S. power producer executes a multi-year program to build and repower a series of natural gas combined-cycle plants across the Gulf Coast and Central U.S., many replacing retiring coal-fired units, SAMCO has been repeatedly selected to supply a standardized demineralized water treatment system design across multiple sites. The program reflects a growing, long-term relationship with the developer’s EPC partners and a proven, repeatable SAMCO system design.
Objective
Deliver a standardized demineralized water treatment system design, adaptable across multiple new-build and replacement power generation sites. Project specifications included:
- Consistent ~150–285 GPM DWTS package sized to each site’s turbine configuration
- A design proven and repeated across numerous site awards
Scope of Service
SAMCO’s customer, a leading EPC/industrial contractor, has engaged SAMCO on a recurring basis to design, engineer, and supply demineralized water treatment systems for successive plants within this generation program.
Challenges
- Meeting an aggressive, multi-site construction schedule across a large geographic footprint
- Maintaining design consistency and manufacturing efficiency across repeat awards
- Supporting turbine technology capable of burning natural gas today and hydrogen in the future
Solution
SAMCO developed a standardized demineralized water treatment system design — built around ultrafiltration, double-pass reverse osmosis, electrodeionization, and PEDI polishing — that could be efficiently replicated across each new site in the program. This repeatable approach has allowed SAMCO to win successive awards as the developer continues to expand its generation fleet, with additional sites in the program expected to be awarded in the years ahead.
Technology
- Ultrafiltration (UF)
- Double-Pass Reverse Osmosis (DPRO)
- Electrodeionization (EDI)
- Portable Exchange Deionization (PEDI) manifold
- Calcite filtration (select sites)
- Control system with PLC/HMI
